Sacraments of Initiation: Young People Celebrate

Young People CelebrateLeader's notes
Young People Celebrate is a resource bank of ideas and activities for use in educating children (aged 10 to 13 years) and young people (aged 14 to 16 years) about the Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic faith. These ideas and activities may be used during the period of catechetical formation leading up to initiation and during the period of post sacramental catechesis because faith formation and spiritual development are ongoing. This resource can be used at any time, to nurture faith.

A separate booklet of worksheets accompanies this resource.

Family Activity Sessions - NEW!

Family Activity SessionThe family activity sessions outlined in this section of the Sacramental Resource Kit represent one way in which the local Christian community can assist in the faith formation of all its members.

All of these sessions have been tried and tested in Brisbane Archdiocesan parishes, both suburban and rural.  They are offered to parish pastoral (sacramental) teams who: recognise the importance of the family as faith educators; see the initiation process as part of a life-long faith journey; want to keep families connected to the community into which they are being initiated; encourage these families to be full and active members of the faith community.

It is envisaged that families enrolled in the parish sacramental process come together at any time during the preparation phase for these sessions led by one or more members of the sacramental team. Ideally these sessions will occur in a central parish setting (hall or church), with parishioners offering welcome and hospitality.

The family sessions are appropriate for families with children aged 7-9 years for Confirmation and Eucharist. These sessions are designed to be completed in approximately 1.5 hours.

Two different family sessions for Penance are outlined – one for use with children aged 6-8 years and one for older children. The session for young children is designed to be completed in 1-1.5 hours and the session for older children, 2-2.5 hours.

The activities provided are suggestions only. Sacramental teams would need to make choices according to the age and interest of children and their families and what might be happening in your parish, schools and wider community.

Sacrament of Penance: An Educational resource.

This resource has been produced to assist parishes / schools who are preparing children (children aged 10-14 years)  for the First Rite of Reconciliation and wish to provide catechesis on the topic of Penance.

Topics:

  1. Ups and downs – dealing with storms in my life and finding peace and healing.
  2. Should I or shouldn’t I? Choice, Commandments, Beatitudes.
  3. I did – so what? Actions have consequences.
  4. Relented, repented and reconciled. Story of the Prodigal. First Rite of Reconciliation explored.
